Knowing when to walk away from an acquisition

Financial and commercial assessment of a fintech opportunity in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The business situation

A regional expansion opportunity involved acquiring an established fintech business rather than entering the market organically. Leadership needed to establish whether the target created strategic and financial value.

Jim’s role

Jim assessed the business model, economics, financials and strategic fit, and met the founders and team in Taiwan.

Actions taken

He examined the investment case and identified adverse conditions within the target that undermined the rationale for proceeding.

The outcome

Jim recommended withdrawing from the acquisition after identifying issues that undermined its strategic and financial rationale. Avoiding the transaction helped preserve the acquiring company’s equity value and protect shareholder interests, keeping capital available for opportunities with stronger potential to create value.
